It's been a long while I've been blogging but I thought I'd take this opportunity to help out a friend of mine actress Stef Dawson who is currently in LA working on a project with Casting Director Matthew Barry ('The Notebook' and 'My Sisters Keeper')

LOCATION: DETROIT, MI

STORYLINE: On April 4th, 1991, in Sacramento, CA four Vietnamese immigrants walked into a Good Guys electronics store and held 39 people hostage for over 8 hours. With their demands not being met and law enforcement confused about what they actually wanted, a shootout took place. In the end, 6 were killed, 11 others wounded. This remains the biggest hostage situation ever in the history of America and the question to this day remains…why did it happen?

LOOKING FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

LOI: (21) Asian – Born in South Vietnam, Loi was only 5 years old when his father, mother and brothers boarded a refugee boat seeking a better life. Refused in 3 different countries and floating at sea for months, they were often robbed at knifepoint by Thai pirates. A victim of such violence, Loi was left with permanent mental and emotional scars. Finally in America, Loi was unable to speak or write English, but unfairly forced into an unwelcoming school system. Wanting to please his father, he tried his very best but frustrated and discouraged, eventually dropped out. Unable to hold down a job, Loi was lonely, confused, and just wanted to go home to Vietnam. LEAD

LONG: (17) Asian - grew up watching American action movies and was entertained and heavily influenced by their violence, bitter Long has been carrying that heavy chip on his shoulder and was angry at the world. He and his friend Cuong tried to burn down their local school and were arrested and scheduled for a court date on April 5th. He hated authority and often clashed with his father, often calling him a “loser”. Manipulative and headstrong, Long was considered the self appointed mastermind behind the hostage plan. LEAD

PHAM: (19) Asian - at 19, Pham was still trying to complete high school. Often the target of humiliating remarks and the brunt of jokes, Pham tried to keep to himself wanting to make a better life for his family. But we all have breaking points. LEAD

CUONG: (17) Asian - The follower, he willingly did everything Long demanded of him. With a sweet, innocent face, Cuong was the victim of a mother who worked from 7am-9pm in her nail salon, hoping to give Cuong quality of life. Money doesn’t replace the need of mother’s love and attention. Like his buddies, he too was influenced by American movies Cuong just wanted to seen as a “tough guy”. LEAD

The grandad I grew up with ...

Joseph Pham Ngoc Phap was born in January 1920 at Luu Phuong village, in the provience of Luu Phuong, Phat Diem in a very religious and respected family. In 1943 he married Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ba. Together they raised ten children. Two have passed away. The remaining eight sons and daughters currently resides in Vietnam, United States and Australia, including Monsignor (Đức Ông) Tuan Joseph Pham. He has 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In 1950, he was elected General Secretary of the Catholic Parish Council of Phat Diem. In 1954, he migrated to the Republic of South Vietnam, where lived at the parish of An Lac, Tan Binh, Saigon. Here he was General Secretary of the An Lac High School and was teacher of Arts and Craft.

In 1992, he moved to the USA. Here he continued engaging with Church movements including the Legion of Mariae.

He was a person of gentleness, he doesn’t talk much, and yet loved by his children and grandchildren. His family legacy encouragres his children to excell academically and contribute to society. He was a very forgiving person, and always sharing with those in need. Towards the final years of his life, being frail due to old age, he spends most of his day on the walking frame, praying at the family private chapel.

His life journey ended on Monday 3 August 2010 at Fountain Valley, aged 90.

Ông cố Giuse Phạm Ngọc Pháp sinh năm 1920 tại làng Lưu Phương (Phát Diệm), tỉnh Ninh Bình Việt nam trong 1 gia đình đạo hạnh gia phong.

Năm 1943, Ông lập gia đình với bà Nguyễn Thị Ba. Ông bà có tất cả 10 người con. Chúa cất đi 2 người, còn lại 8 người con (4 gái và 4 trai, trong đó có 1 Linh Mục là Đức Ông Giuse Phạm Quốc Tuấn, 21 người cháu nội ngoại và 4 chắt).

Năm 1950, Ông Cố làm thư ký Hội Đồng Giáo xứ Phát Diệm. Biến cố 1954, Ông Bà và gia đình bỏ miền bắc, trốn chạy Cộng sản, tìm tự do tại miền Nam Việt nam. Sinh sống tại xứ An lạc, xã Tân Sơn Hòa, quận Tân Bình Sài gòn. Tại đây, Ông Cố làm thư ký văn phòng Trường Trung học An Lạc, giảng viên lớp may cắt Bộ Lao Động thuộc chế độ Việt nam Cộng Hòa.

Biến cố 1975, Ông Bà Cố tìm mọi cách để con cái vượt thoát VN, tìm tự do qua các chuyến vượt biển hãi hung và gian khổ.

Năm 1992, Ông Bà được đoàn tụ với con cái tại Hoa Kỳ. Cũng tại đây, Ông Cố tham gia vào các Đoàn Thể như Legio Mariae, phong trào Tôn Nữ Vương Gia đình …

Tính tình Ông Cố hiền hậu, ít nói, rất yêu thương con cháu và thường xuyên khuyên con cháu cố gắng học hành để nên người, giúp ích cho đời. Có thể nói Ông Cố là người chồng, người Cha, người Ông nhân từ đạo hạnh và cần mẫn. Ông có tinh thần vị tha, cảm thông giúp đỡ những người thiếu may mắn nên được nhiều người kính mến ! Vì tuổi già sức yếu, không đi lại được nhiều, Ông Cố phải bám vào xe lăn để đến phòng nguyện của gia đình cầu nguyện liên lỉ với Chúa hàng ngày.

Cuộc hành trình dương thế đã đến giờ viên mãn, Chúa gọi Ông về ngày 3 tháng 8năm 2010 tại Fountain Valley, hưởng thọ 90 tuổi, trong bình an, thương tiếc và yêu mến của Bà và các con cháu, chắt và mọi người.

They met at the most unexpected of times, then fell in love making one of the most charmingly blessed couple I have come acrossed. More than 300 guests attended an intimate reception at Canley Height's INTERNATIONAL RESTAURANT. Highlights of the night included the Dong Tam dragon dancing performance, music provided by DJ Tony, New Stars band and Sydney's favourite Vietnamese artist, Minh Tam.

Last week, I attended the official launch of the Salvation Army 2010 Red Shield Appeal. The Salvation Army, in international movement, is an evangelical part of the Christian Church. Part of the mission involves meeting human need wherever it occurs, without discrimination.

Special guest speakers were The Hon. Laurie Ferguson, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services and Commissioner Linda Bond, Territorial Comander.

Every year, only in the last weekend of the month of May, is the Red Shiel Appeal. This year's national target for the overall Red Shield Appeal, which includes a business appeal and direct mail campaign is $75 million. The doorknock, which is also a major part of the campaign, will be held nationally on the weekend of 29 & 30 May, 2010.

These two wonderful individuals met during a trip in Melbourne two years ago. Mets was there for a boys weekend, while Quynh-Nhu for a girls weekend, but then their mutual friends, Imran & Porlleak (Best Man & Maid of Honour) introduced Mets to Quynh-Nhu, and this was where all the magic started.

Asked the bride what she love most about the groom. Quynh-Nhu says Mets is someone who bout the makes her laugh everyday and she knows, that life with him will never be boring. He’s someone who surprises her everyday, and waking up early to make her breakfast and healthy lunches. He’s described as an honest and uncomplicated person who gives his true thoughts on everything.

And she was right. And being an uncomplicated person he is, Mets gave a much shorter answer. He says there is not one thing about Quynh-Nhu he doesn’t love, he loves her for who she is.

The reception with the attendance of 300 guests was held at International Restaurant in Canley Heights. Highlights of the evening included a special performance of the Cook Island musicians, Asian music provided by New Stars Band featuring Minh Tam.

KHOA DO: Film-making in the Vietnamese Diaspora

In October last year, in preparation for a Film Discussion Forum I organised: "Film-making in the Vietnamese Diaspora" held at Fairfield School of Arts, I had the chance of catching up with Australian film director Khoa Do to ask him for some thoughts in the topic. Now, in celebrating the upcoming world premiere of "MOTHERFISH", I'd like to post up some of his interesting comments:

Did you want to become a film-maker as a child?

No, I spent too much time "cat chi" to think about films. But I've always loved telling stories. I used to tell stories in class, write stories and make up stories.

What are the challenges involved in film-making?

1. You can't eat durian on your film set because your cinematographer will drop the camera.
2. You can't film a sunrise scene with Vietnamese actors because they will all come half an hour late, after the sun has risen.
3. You can't have a chinese chess set on your film set because the Vietnamese actors will all be playing chess instead of acting.
4. You can't have Joseph Dinh on set as he makes everything Vietnamese.

What would you like to see in the future of the Viet film industry ?

Highly original, truthful stories with amazing performances and compelling narratives. Stories that express a unique and distinct Vietnamese voice.

What advice could you give to young people aspiring to enter the film industry?

1. Study hard to get into medicine.
2. If you don't get into medicine, try dentistry.
3. If you don't get into dentistry, try accounting.
4. If you can't count, try filmmaking

Fairfield Champion: OUR BEAUTIES ARE WINNERS

They came, they saw, they conquered - and they have the crowns to prove it. Fairfield Champion Melanie Kembrey reports.

THERE must be something in the water in Fairfield.

Our girls dominated the Miss Viet Uc 2010 beauty pageant and sashayed away with the top crowns.

Anna Vo, Serina Duong, Kelly Phuong and Thi Liu defeated 16 queen-wannabes to take out the coveted Miss Viet-Uc, first and second runner-up and Miss Congeniality crowns.

They batted their eyelashes, modelled their traditional Vietnamese dresses and talked about changing the world in front of more than 600 people.

Ms Vo, who won the beauty pageant, said it was no surprise that Fairfield girls dominated the competition.

"I honestly definitely think Fairfield has the most beautiful girls in Australia," she says.

Ms Vo, 20 of Canley Heights, isn't your run-f-the-mill beauty pageant winner.

She enjoys reading history books, wants to be a criminologist and says she's a "nerd."

"It's a bit of a struggle to go between the worlds of studying and pageant," Ms Vo said.

She won $10,000 worth of prizes - including airline tickets - and, of course, the crown.

"When they announced my name I started crying because I was so in shock," she said.

"I'm going on a trip to Vietnam and will probably save the rest of the money."

Second runner-up Serina Duong, 20, of Canley Vale, said the pageant was just like a scene from a movie.

"It was exactly like a movie but without all the drama and the figiting between the girls," Ms Duong said.

"I've never done anything like this before so it was all new to me."

"We tried to keep it real."

The young women rehearsed twice a week for more than three months to prepare for the competition.

They competed in formal wear, swimwear, ao dai (traditional Vietnamese long dress) and question-and-answer categories.

The beauties all agreed that their crowns were far too heavy to wear when they were watching television at home.

"They are really heavy and actually kind of hurt," Ms Vo said.

"We wore them to the pageant after-party and all complained afterwards."

Bankstown Torch: MISS VIET UC ANNOUNCED

SIXTEEN competitors from all over Australia - including two Bankstown girls - took part in the finals of MISS VIET-UC 2010 competition.

Host of the event, Vanity Management managing director Amanda Le said the annual event is one of the most meaningful cultural activities for young Vietnamese Australian women living in Australia.

The finalists included Tammy Thai and Rachel Lam (pictured) from Bankstown. The winners were Anna Vo, who won Miss Viet Uc 2010, with Kelly Phuong award first runner up and Serina Duong, winning second runner up. Miss Viet Uc 2010, Anna Vo, will start her first task by visiting Vietnam and perform charitable activities as well as returning back to Australia for charity and modeling work.

The search is on...

THE Vietnamese community is looking for the next Jennifer Hawkins.

Twenty girls will be competing for the Miss Viet Oz crown on April 2 at Mounties.

They will get some practice this Sunday with a fashion parade of traditional Vietnamese dresses in Cabramatta's Freedom Plaza at 1.45pm as part of the Lunar New Year celebrations.

The pageant is open to women aged 17 to 27, with a Vietnamese background living in Australia.

On top of the formal and swimwear categories, the top five girls will have to answer questions from the judges.

The finalist are all in the running for Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality, Miss People's Choice and Miss Aodai (traditional dress) titles.

You can vote for the people's choice award at Mounties in the lead-up to the final.

BANKSTOWN's Vietnamese community will be represented amont the 2700 Australian and international performers coming together for Sydney's 2010 Chinese New Year Twilight Parade.
Bankstown resident and 2009 Australian-Vietnamese of the Year, Joseph Hieu Dinh said that for the first time, City of Sydney Chinese New Year festival organisers have extended an invitation to the Bankstown Vietnamese community to take part in the event.

A yellow Hoa Mai (New Year Vietnamese blossoms) float has been designed as part of the parade led by characters "Mr. & Mrs. Apple."

"Ong Ba Tao (Mr. and Mrs. Apple) are the Vietnamese traditional kitchen gods," Mr. Dinh said.

"Every year at the Vietnamese Tet New Year, these kitchen gods have a messenger role of reporting the household's years events to Heaven.

"The house owners would have to bribe these gods with offerings for a good report in order to receive good fortune and blessings from Heaven in the coming year."

Mr. Dinh said the iconic Mr. & Mrs. Apple, dressed in traditional costumes ao-dai (long dress) and ao-Tu-Than (Northern Vietnamese four piece female costume) will add a touch of Vietnamese to the festival.

Also accompanying the float are traditional Vietnamese dancers, acrobats and martial arts group.

The spectacular street show will move from Sydney Town Hall to Chinatown from 7.45pm on Sunday February 21, 2010 and will feature traditional performers, and the contemporary, including aerialists and stilt walkers. Last year's inaugural Twilight Parade attracted around 100,000 people to the city streets, Around 300 performers from Chongqing City, China, show off their world-renowned acrobatic skills and enormous dragons.

City of Sydney: TWILIGHT PARADE CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Vietlish is supporting CITY OF SYDNEY in a call out for volunteers

City of Sydney is seeking up to 20 volunteers to participate in some exciting entries in the 2010 Chinese New Year Twilight Parade.

City of Sydney's annual Chinese New Year Festival is the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia. Anchored by a major street parade of international standard, the Festival includes more than 40 fantastic events produced by arts organisations, museums and community groups celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Sydney's streets will again be filled with lanterns, lights, dragons and dancers for the 2010 Chinese New Year Twilight Parade, celebrating the Year of the Tiger.

The inaugural Twilight Parade in 2009 involved more than 2,600 performers and drew crowds of approximately 100,000 people to the Festival's most beautiful event.

Volunteer participants will be integral to the presentation of the parade leading segments of the parade with mobile lightboxes which present imagery and messages relating to the Lunar New Year and the participants involved in the parade.

Participants will not need previous performance experience, however should be enthusiastic and have at least a moderate level of physical physical fitness (the entry may take up to one hour to move along the parade route).

Participants will be required to attend a 1 hour briefing on Monday 15 February 2010, where they will be fully instructed on their role, and will need to be available for the parade from 6pm-10pm on Sunday 21st February 2010.

This provides a unique opportunity to be involved in the 2010 Chinese New Year Twilight Parade celebrating the Year of the Tiger and engage with representatives from a range of communities who celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Sinh ra và lớn lên tại Úc, các bạn trẻ này được xếp vào thế hệ người Việt thứ hai hay thế hệ 2.0. Có những người chưa từng biết đến cái Tết thật sự ở Việt Nam nhưng với họ, hương vị Tết vẫn đong đầy từ lúc ấu thơ cho đến khi trưởng thành. Lại cũng có những người không mặn mà gì với Tết Việt Nam mà chỉ biết đến Tết Tây.

1. Tết... là gì?
Tony Nguyễn, 24 tuổi, sống ở Melbourne đã được 16 năm. Với Tony, Tết dường như là một khái niệm gì đó mơ hồ lắm. Tony không hiểu tại sao cứ Tết đến là mình phải lì xì... cho ai đó! Tony cho biết gia đình mình thuộc loại đông con cháu nhưng ai cũng bận rộn việc riêng nên không có thời gian chuẩn bị Tết, nhất là nếu Tết lại rơi vào ngày thường. Bạn bè xung quanh thì cũng không có vẻ ‘mặn mà’ gì với Tết. Vì vậy, Tony ăn mừng Tết Tây nhiều hơn là Tết ta.

‘Lão làng’ hơn Tony, Minh Hiếu sinh ra và lớn lên tại Melbourne. Đã trải qua 21 cái Tết tại Úc nhưng trong ký ức Hiếu không đọng lại chút gì hương vị ngày Tết. Có chăng là nỗi thắc mắc tại sao cứ đến dịp Tết là ba mẹ lại bắt Hiếu phải xin nghỉ một ngày làm việc để ở nhà. Hiếu bảo: “Ở nhà cũng chẳng để làm gì, chán ơi là chán, mọi người cũng có tụ tập về nhà ba mẹ ăn cơm nhưng cũng chẳng khác gì ngày thường cả!”

2. Tết bánh chưng bánh tét

Joseph Hiếu Đinh sinh ra và lớn lên tại thành phố Sydney bang New South Wales. Hiếu là một trong những người sáng lập Vietlish Entertainment. Joseph Hiếu Đinh cũng đã được bầu chọn là Người Úc gốc Việt xuất sắc năm 2009 (Mr. 2009 Australian - Vietnamese of the Year).

Với Hiếu, Tết Việt Nam ở Úc không thể tách rời với hương vị bánh chưng bánh tét. Nhà Hiếu có một mảnh vườn nhỏ chuyên trồng lá dong để gói bánh chưng. Từ khi bốn tuổi, mỗi lần Tết đến, Hiếu lại chạy loanh quanh bên cha để xem gói bánh chưng. “Lúc ấy còn nhỏ chẳng biết gì, chỉ biết tò mò ngắm nghía, rồi vọc cái này cái kia...”, Hiếu nhớ lại. Hương vị bánh chưng theo Hiếu suốt những năm sau đó cho đến lúc Hiếu đã có thể cùng cha gói bán.

“Ban đầu, Hiếu không biết gói sao cho ra hình vuông dù đã có khuôn, kết quả là giống bánh giò hay bánh dày! Sau này có kinh nghiệm rồi, cha con truyền cho nhau thì Hiếu gói bánh đẹp hơn. Do lá dong hạn chế nên nhà Hiếu gói bánh không vì mục đích thương mại mà chủ yếu là để biếu bà con họ hàng. Tuy Tết ở Úc chắc không có được đầy đủ cái hương vị Tết đặc trưng như ở Việt Nam nhưng gia đình Hiếu luôn cố gắng duy trì những nét văn hóa Việt Nam.”

3. Tết lì xì
Dũng Neo theo ba mẹ đến thành phố Melbourne thuộc bang Victoria khi vừa tròn một tuổi. Cứ đúng mùng một Tết, mọi người trong gia đình Dũng lại tề tựu đông đủ, quây quần cùng nhau bên mâm cơm cuối năm. Cái lệ này được giữ gìn qua rất nhiều năm dù Tết có rơi vào ngày thường đi chăng nữa. “Chỉ có điểm khác là buổi gặp mặt này được tổ chức sớm hay trễ - ban ngày hay buổi tối tùy thời điểm Tết rơi vào ngày thường hay cuối tuần hoặc dịp lễ”, Dũng cho biết.

Ký ức về Tết với Dũng gắn liền với những bao lì xì đỏ. Từ lúc còn học tiểu học, Dũng đã được cô giáo giảng giải về ngày Tết như sau: “Dịp Tết các em sẽ nhận được bao đỏ sau khi các em chúc Tết ông bà và người lớn.”

Khi còn nhỏ, tiền lì xì được Dũng để dành mua kẹo bánh. Dũng kể bạn từng rất vui mỗi khi nhận được lì xì vì lúc ấy còn nhỏ, chưa đi làm kiếm tiền được. Năm nay, Dũng không còn để dành tiền lì xì để mua kẹo bánh nữa mà vì một mục đích ‘tốn kém’ hơn: dành dụm tiền về Việt Nam chơi vào một ngày không xa...

4. Tết ra riêng
Yến Tô cũng thuộc thế hệ 2.0, hiện cô đang sống tại thành phố Brisbane thuộc bang Queensland. Yến vừa mua nhà ra ở riêng khoảng sáu tháng nay. “Vì giá nhà rẻ, với lại Yến cũng 25 tuổi rồi, đã đến lúc tính chuyện sống độc lập”, Yến cho biết.

Tết năm nay là cái Tết đầu tiên Yến sống một mình. Những năm trước, do sống cùng ba mẹ nên Tết đến cô không phải lo gì nhiều. Có chăng là giúp ba mẹ dọn dẹp nhà cửa chuẩn bị đón Tết. “Năm nay, ở riêng rồi nên chắc cũng phải làm gì đó để chuẩn bị Tết, chắc chắn là phải có mâm ngũ quả. Yến sẽ gọi điện thoại hỏi mẹ cách chuẩn bị như thế nào”. Vì còn độc thân nên Yến quyết định sẽ về nhà ba mẹ vào ngày mùng Một Tết.

Cũng vừa ra ở riêng được hơn bốn tháng nhưng Kim Nguyễn, hiện đang sống tại Sydney, có vẻ ‘vất vả’ hơn Yến. Do đã kết hôn nên Tết năm nay Kim phải chuẩn bị một cái Tết đàng hoàng cho gia đình nhỏ của mình. Kim lên kế hoạch sẽ dọn dẹp và trang hoàng nhà cửa, sang nhà mẹ học vài món ăn ngày Tết, đặt bánh chưng bánh tét và sẽ cùng ‘anh xã’ đi chùa đầu năm và thăm họ hàng hai bên.

Kim bảo: “Mấy tuần nay, cứ cuối tuần là Kim tranh thủ chạy về nhà mẹ để học vài ‘bí quyết’ cho ngày Tết. Năm nay là cái Tết đầu tiên của hai vợ chồng Kim nên phải chuẩn bị thật chu đáo”.
Dù bận rộn nhiều nhưng ánh mắt Kim sáng long lanh khi nói đến những dự định cho gia đình mới của mình trong năm Canh Dần sắp đến…

Luke Nguyen was presented with a commemorative gift for his contributions as Celebrity Chef Ambassador for 2009 SMH International Food Festival, in which Cabramatta was selected as launch site. A respected Sydney Chef, best known for his SBS-TV cooking series, Luke appears at ease, very down-to-earth, showcasing his trendy black jacket and rectangular specs. We had a great chat about his future projects, and he was also talking me into taking a trip to see Vietnam myself (cause I've never been before).

Summer Sidewalk Games (Workshop at Powerhouse Youth Theatre Fairfield)

Maria Tran and I spent our Saturday afternoon (1pm - 5pm) at the Wareabouts street theatre and improvisation class. It was heaps of fun working with others in a series of fun acting exercises and games. My favorite would have to the "space jump" activity where people are introduced into a scene and they must quickly improvise a scenario off the top of their head.We moved out of the space to the great Fairfield outdoors and partnered up to formulate a scene for onlookers and passerbys.the day ended with 3 rounds of Wareabouts game where we were armed with walkie talkies and flag poles and had the task of tracking down the target in a flourescent vest.This activity was a little tiring as we had to fight the heat and concentrate on the game.Overall, it was a great Saturday avo of building more comedy skills and acting.

Brief on Workshop

The Sidewalk Games are workshops in using Games for Performance, held in January, April, and October.This workshop is designed for those aged 16-29 with previous performance experience or who have an interest in outdoor performances. It is about exploring Improvisation and Games, both indoors and outdoors, that can be used to create performance and develop performing skills.We will also be playing “Wareabouts is the Flag”, an outdoor navigation game of teamwork and bright-coloured vests.To register, contact Andy Ko on wareabouts(AT)pyt.com.au

Myself and the other half of Vietlish Maria Tran attended the 19th International Short Film Festival FLICKERFEST on Monday night (11 Jan). It was a different experience as we arrived for a 9pm start in an outdoor cinema under the Bondi stars. Being right next to the beach, it was getting a bit cold from the winds and so the team gave out cosy blankets.

It wasn't a formal event as I thought; plenty of surfer locals rocking up in thongs and shorts. They had a long lost of impressive sponsors, yet the festival had less than 100 people attending, almost as intimate as local Fairfield Shortcuts Film Festival. But then again, Flickefest will be touring at 23 different venues "across Australia," I guess that's where all the funding goes - the travelling !

For those who have never been to a Film Festival before, it's a night where emerging film-makers showcase their work, which gets judged by a selection judging panel: actors, producers who have relevant profiles. Audience also gets a say by voting their favourite films. At the end of the week-long festival is the Awards ceremony where the winners will be announced.

What's special about Flickerfest is that it's "Academy-accredited," that means winning films may qualify to enter the Short Film category at the actual Oscars ! It's also an international festival with a range of subjects and cultures that represents a unique view of global cinema. Shout out to the friends we met: Maylei Hunt, Claudia & Eleanor (PYT).

Highlights of the evening include digital storytelling presentation clips of the lovely couple, in-house performance of the bride's talented sister Vivian Nguyen, and the new Vietlish-Wedding Chirades game in which the Bride's team aced, thanks to Bec's super-expressive abilities.

10 Vietlish Observations on BAD Wedding MCs

1. We've witness a so-called renowned Vietnamese MC rocking up late to their gig, unapologetic, and drunk saying "Please welcome the most IMPOTENT couple of the night". Beware of fobby Vietnamese Mc's who don't present too well in English and don't gve them too much to drink.

2. Beware of single Mc's who may have the tendency to use the Mc status to pick up the bridesmaid, or desperate female MC's who moves herself to a different table to hit-on male guests instead of following the run-sheet.

3. Look out for Mc's who can't speak a word of Vietnamese and annoyingly translates everything "like a parrot."

4. Never go for family Mc's, people have been cheap on mcs and think they can save the money by getting their uncle and aunts to do the job. It ain't cool watching a first time public speaker who may be loud at the 'ban nhau' but quiver on stage as he reads his scribbled pieces of paper like it's his first time learning to read English.

5. Mc'ing is a fine art that reflects character and should have charisma. We've seen what we called "scavenger MC's" who bring their wives to the party and their takeaway boxes going around the tables to get tomorrow's breakfast, lunch and dinner.

6. Mc's who have bad dress sense like Elvis suits, 80s style combovers and reeks of cheap cologne.

7. Mc's who Mc like it's a protest (excessive shouting), funeral home (sad glum on their faces), comedy club (with unhumourous jokes), with signals that they wish they were elsewhere (looking at watch, sighing, excessive disappearance to the toilet).

8. Mc's who think they can sing (trying hearing Mc's croak out the top ten loves songs would sure encourage anyone to divorce to make him stop).

9. Female Mc's - who think they are supermodels or wear the most hoey dress that would make the father of the bride break a sweat during his speech.

10. Mcs who party more than they Mc!

Extra 1: Mcs who are make weird linkages such as what they had for breakfast and then connecting it to how much they value marriage. Do vo duyen!

Extra 1. Mcs who look old, grumpy, worn out and don't believe in love and have been through several divorces and "Vo be's".

Maria Tran and I had our New Year escape in Melbourne this, a part from the usual melodramas of Vietlish such as bickering, name calling, and bouts of threats of the end of an empire, we both managed our adventures as mc host of another wedding gig, celebrating the love of Danish groom Torben Svendsen and Vietnamese bride Chloe Nguyen.

The Wedding Ceremony was held earlier at Werribee Park Mansion and we've joined them for the wedding reception at Peninsula C reception at 6pm, Shed 14, 161 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands Victoria 3008.

This is Vietlish's first wedding gig interstate! And this time round our client found us through the power of google and through the referral of the cute an quirky bridesmaid and our Vietlish episodes. CLICK for VietlishTV

The gig: the venue itself exerbures epicness, high ceilings, massive concert style dancefloors, an operating bar overlooking the waters. Catering: was provided by Crystal Palace Catering (Melbourne) with crab claw, Peking duck, fresh lobsters with Ginger an shallot, quails, eye fillets with mushroom and desserts of mango pudding and fresh fruit platter.

I spoiled myself half a delicable dish of lobster while Maria, trying to keep her vegetarian NYE resolution accidently opted for Singapore noodles, some greens and Bits of mushroom and tofu !

Music/ entertainment: Provided by Higher Grounds Band. This is a five-person band, two girls, three guys. Loved their music - they can perform all sorts from my favourite BUBLE songs to Asian Cha-Cha-Cha favourites "Black Magic Woman" and being a musical person myself, I couldnt resist but to sing-along all night.

Highlights: the awesome god-like thunder toilets (marble and all and I don't know where the knob is), the decor, lighting, the goodies table of all things pink (donuts, lollies, marshmallows, lychees, cherries, fondue and fizzy sticks), the Bridal Waltz with artificial snow, the Father-Daughter dance to "You Raised Me Up."

As this was a Viet-Danish wedding, there were a couple of Danish traditions we got to introduce to the Vietnamese guests:

1. Anytime the groom leaves the table, the closest male within the vincinity of the bride can kiss her. And vice versa. But keep in mind it's a congratulatory kiss - so.. nothing extreme !

2. After the Bridal Waltz, the guys would remove the groom's shoes tearing off his socks. Symbolically it will prevent him from running away, and by being a good wife, the Bride should be able to mend it together for the husband !

2010 have started already gigs lined up fully booked til March, so for anyone wanting a "vietlish" new age experience, book soon because we are running out of weekends!

It's one of those rare weekends I get to spend some time chilling out with Maria Tran: Christmas is over, our Vietlish work for 2009 has been finalised, the required work plans for 2010 all fully completed. We've been training hard at the local gym (three hours in total of hard work yesterday in fact) and rewarding ourselves with a Sumo Salad treat at Liverpool Westfields. Shout out to our friends who we met today: Island Phan, Jack Ngu & Quoc Do (have fun at camping guys) !

On our way back, I noticed this very interesting numberplate that looks like SAIGON to me. I was a bit excited and sped up a little bit to see a glimpse of the driver. To my dissappointment, he doesn't look Viet to me... thanks Maria for taking the photo while I'm driving !

Am I seeing things? Or am I just too Viet-oriented?

FOOD REVIEW: Nick's Cockle Bay Wharf Seafood Restaurant

This place is yum! yum! when it comes to seafood. I can only compare this seafood experience with Watson's Bay Doyles Resturant and I'd like to say it kicks ass!

Me and my colleague Maria Tran tried the $145 Seafood Platter for 2 an awesome display of fresh cooked lobster, steamed mussels, fried calamari, catch of the day,king prawns, blue swimmer crab, freshly shucked oysters and avocado with sweet chilli calamari.

Platter for 2? No way! more like for 4! Definitely worth the indulgence and the finer details in presentation makes it all worth while.

Truong Quoc Dung & Ho Nhu Quynh met in 2008 in Vietnam and ever since they are fallen so deeply for each to lead to that special day where their unionship is confirmed. A traditional Vietnamese tea-ceremony was held at their family residence in Cabramatta coordinated by Joseph Hieu Dinh, followed by a reception at Bar Luck Restaurant with an intimate crowd of 140 guests. Hosted by Joseph Hieu Dinh & Maria Tran from Vietlish-TV, highlights of the night included the bellyful of laughs of the Vietlish-Wedding Game and the entertainment included Sydney's favourite Tram Anh and Minh Tam.Check out the pics below.

Christmas hasn’t ended for myself and Maria Tran, and from the Santos Café Canley Heights Xmas party, we were called to do another gig but this time with Campsie RSL and in partnership with Queen Bee Band.

Maria sported the Christmas spirit with red and green while I exhibited my snowman pin on the suit. The crowd slowly trickled in by 9.30pm and Vietlish engaged the crowd with some interested trivia. While preparing the trivia, I learnt something interesting: Reindeer in Vietnamese is actually called 'tuần lộc'.. It was so fun seeing people so hyped up to participate, they even forget returning for prizes they won ! We then moved on a very dynamic Christmas-Tree balloon game with 4 “gungho” and competitive teams.

The band for the night was the Queen Bee Band (Internationally renown band), nhac si Vu Quang Trung with top singers KIM THOA, NGOC MINH, CAM QUYNH.

Lucky-door prizes and give aways were won and boy, was it a fun night!

A big thank you to all Vietlish friends and those who attended to support ! Shout out to Viet Anh Vu, Jessie Nguyen, Sally Hoang, Vinh Dinh, Dr. Duy Tuong whom I got a chance to briefly meet-up. A big shout-out to VINH LUU who came all the way from Melbourne and MARTIN from Canberra just for the show ! Makes my day just seeing you guys !

TRIBUTE 2 TRIVO

Saturday 5 December 2009, I attended the Inauguration of the new Vietnamese Community in Australia (VCA-NSW Chapter) led by newly-elect President Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh at the VCA Centre Bonnyrigg. I was a bit sad to see Mr. Tri Vo finishing off his second term of Presidency. He tells me being a leader was a tough job, having to make tough decisions and dodging eggs at the same time (both literally and metaphorically). We had great memories from being in the same Amazing Race team at DH5 back 2005, to many community projects, professional lunches, Santos coffee, to blackjack nights with Khoa Do.

So I figured... he's not gonna leave the Community with just a generic bunch of flowers they give all the time. As a personal present, I awarded him the BEST PRESIDENT trophy for his support and guidance. Hope he likes it...

AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES: SAINT MARY

Thousands of Catholics across Australia received an early Christmas gift this weekend. Just hours ago, Vatican officials announced the Pope's approval for the canonisation of Blessed Mary MacKillop, making her now officially Australia's first universally-recognised SAINT.

I had a chance to visit the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel, and its not surprising that on the eve of the annoucement, the number of visitors doubled.

“It’s been a busy weekend for all of us,” says Sister Rita Reilly, “There are at least forty visitors from all backgrounds every half hour.”

Asked if Saints actually make miracles, the aging Josephite nun smiled, her jumper displaying the M-shaped cross logo, similar to the ABC.

“It’s only God, who makes miracles. We only pray for the Saint’s intercession.”

It would take up to two confirmed miracles before a candidate is canonized. In 1995, Mary Mackillop was beatified for the miraculous cure of a leukaemia sufferrer. Today Vatican confirms the second miracle involving a lung cancer sufferer in the 1990s, the cured woman still living today.

If a cure cannot be scientifically explained, and was not possible by any other means than divine intervention, the Church declares it a miracle.

Sister Reily believes now that the annoucement has been made, canonisation might be as early as next year (2010).

Among the faithful pilgrims, I met this young Chinese Christian, who was praying for help and guidance to help solve his difficult financial situation. Inside the Prayer Intentions book he writes:

“Dear Mary MacKillop, With our currant financial strains, I pray to our Lord, our God to help us in this difficult time… we give onto you all the things we have, and all the things that we do, Amen.”

Canley Heights Christmas Party & Grand Opening of SANTOS Canley Heights

Thursday afternoon and I arrived Canley Heights to see great community Christmas cheer. Around 200 parents and children enjoyed the free horse-rides, Santa photos, jumping castle, unlimited food and drinks. And as the main organiser and Santos Cafe Managing Director says: "Its a chance for local businesses to give back something to the community." He hopes this would potentially become an annual event. I was there to coordinate the interactive raffle draws, prize won by Jenny (from fairfield) and Councillor Zaya Toma.

At 7PM was the Grand Opening of Santos Cafe presented by myself Maria Tran.

Last year I recall coordinating/MCing the 2008 Noel Vui Happy Christmas Event and it was the first time gig that Vietlish had run with the community; with live bands, music, Christmas carols and heaps and heaps of giveaways. Vietlish Clip: NOEL VUI 2008

Coming back to the present time, tonight was a fun and mellow mini red carpet event with great mingling food and unlimited Coronas; an event that should not have been missed out by any Asian in their mid 20s and living out Western Sydney.

The new Santos is very modern, it has a bar, a fireplace, it’s got outside dining, and a lounge area. In addition, the space is digitally equipped with LCD screens for entertainment and the front windows fold open to provide views overlooking the street.

Apparently Santos is a part of a wave of new dining experiences for Canley Heights, and as Fairfield State MP Joe Tripodi says "bringing the Leichardt to Canley Heights".

The context of it is that there isn't many trendy places out the west but Santos Cafe has been the central hot spot for over 24 years for after work drinks, coffee meet ups and business get togethers.

And now with its new location (literally just across the street), it's design and inner decor can be view by passerbys on the streets. The who's who of Fairfield regions were there. Fairfield Mayor Nich Lalich and former councillor Del Bennett, Joe Tripodi, Frank Carbone, Cherly Bosler (Cabramatta Moon Festival Team), T.K. (Kien Ly), Joseph Adams, Zaya Toma, Dai Le where amongst the guests.

Raffle draws, outdoor rock band performances by local band TRACK SEVEN and hot racing cars and bikes were all in display for public access.

Shout out to Mr John Mileno - Busines owner of Santos who was one busy man for the night. Also a thank you to all our friends who attended.. and waitresses Nhung & Anna for all the attention !

Maria Nguyen To Anh Nguyet and Davis Huynh were primary-school classmates. What was thought as a mere childhood crush turned out to be one of the most simple yet genuine love stories of the year. These lovely people met again at a friend’s birthday party where Davis asked Maria out. Maria at first pretended she didn’t hear, but eventually said ‘yes’ because she was sure there was already something between them.

While they were both sitting at the computer table playing games, doing what they both love, Davis unexpectedly asked: “Hey, wanna get married?” Maria turned around and said: “Yes.”

The lovebirds tied-the-knot in a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony on December 5th, 2009 coordinated by Joseph Hieu Dinh and the paperwork through Marriage Celebrant Cecilia Lam. This is followed by a reception at Bach Dang Restaurant in Canley Vale attended by an intimate crowd of 240.

Highlights of the night includes the first dance with ‘Heaven’(Bryan Adams) performed live by best friend Kylie Morte as well as the intimate speeches of cousin Peter and bride’s sister Annalee Nguyen.

Greatest gift from a poetic granny

Sitting in bed with my laptop at 12midnight, being unable to sleep, my eyes rested upon a small sticky-note pad on my bedside with a couple of words, something with my name on it.
Turns out to be the very words scribbled by a "Bac Ky" granny,
a renown international poet by the name of DAN PHUNG.

I had an opportunity to meet and work with her in the Vietlish project VIETNAMESE STORYCUBES back in June.

At the age of 88, she was the oldest participant who is famous for her signature hand-written poetry transcripts with a distinctive stamp that 'certifies' its originality. A couple of poet lovers even asked her for copies, so that they could frame it at home. Within this very blog, I myself have translated and analysed one of her poems: Winter in Australia - Mua Dong Xu Uc.

Myself and Maria Tran hosted the launch of Vietnamese Storycubes at CabraVale Leisure Centre on 26th September 2009. During the event we invited her to come up and share her thoughts. And to our surprise, she took a sticky-note pad out of her pocket.

Turns out, the entire event she took the time to create a short Vietnamese poetic couplet dedicated to myself. Yes, in front of 200 plus guests, Fairfield Mayor Nick Lalich and community guests she reads:

"Tuổi trẻ nhiệt thành say lý tưởng,
Tài nay vương sáng một tương lai”

Translates:
"Youthful age, filled with enthusiasm and noble ideals,
This talent leads to a promising future."

I felt humbled and unworthy of such positive lines. Yet it was one of the most heart-touching gifts ever given to me, this time from an old granny who lives in a housing unit by herself with few furniture. It's placed on my bedside table, so that everytime I feel down, those few words would set me in the right direction. It's become more of a guidance for me: In life, without passion or enthusiasm or a strong positive mind - you won't get anywhere.

It's almost Christmas, a time of giving and being with your loved ones. I'll definitely schedule myself time to give her a visit.

Koori Youth Yarn Up event

Today I attended the Koori Youth Yarn Up launch all the way at Cranebrook, a 55-minute drive from Bankstown. Like the previous Vietlish supported project Vietnamese Storyexchange, this event showcased six-digital stories in the form of mini-films of indigenous Koori people living in Western Sydney. Special guests attending the event include Karyn Paluzzano MP (State Member for Penrith) and actor Tony Ryan from Australian feature film The Combination.

Despite the 27-degree heat, the event was packed with the young participants and their families and supporters. I was about to leave early to attend a VCA event but was so fascinated by the arts, I stayed til the end. And it was a worth stay because it became a learning experience for me, a different culture, enjoying the dance performances and a good chance to catch up with Maria Tran, her sister Elizabeth, Timothy Ly (cameraman) and Linh Trinh (this guy we keep calling ‘Chinaman’ I almost forgot his real name).

We had fun taking turns trying to interpret the many paintings put on display – and that’s the beauty of art ! Art can be interpreted in many ways, as long as you remain open, have some fun, and not force your own interpretation upon others.

Niềm vinh dự của gia đình
“Mười năm nữa thì không còn đủ chỗ để tụi nhỏ học xong ngành y ra làm việc”, anh B. dẫn lời một người bạn trong một buổi nói chuyện cách đây mười năm.

Thế nhưng, mười năm sau, ‘tụi nhỏ’ vẫn tiếp tục lao vào học bác sĩ, luật sư theo ý nguyện của cha mẹ và vẫn còn đầy chỗ cho các bác sĩ và luật sư tương lai ‘hành nghề’.

Dạo sơ một vòng cộng đồng Việt tại Úc, dễ dàng nhận thấy tâm lý thích con cái theo học những ngành luật, bác sĩ, dược của các bậc phụ huynh. “Có một gia đình người Việt đến Úc vào cuối những năm 80. Gia đình đó có ba người con trai thì cả ba đều theo ngành y. Con trai trưởng thì sau khi tốt nghiệp ngành bác sĩ, tiếp tục nâng cao chuyên môn (specialist), làm việc trong bệnh viện và cưới vợ cũng là dược sĩ. Còn hai đứa con trai còn lại cũng làm bác sĩ”, anh B. kể.

Trong khi đó, không dễ dàng để vào học những ngành này, điểm đầu vào dựa trên kết quả kỳ thi tốt nghiệp trung học (VCE) lúc nào cũng cao ngất ngưởng. Con cái làm bác sĩ, luật sư được xem là niềm vinh dự của cả gia đình. “Học y, học luật thì không lo ra trường không có việc làm. Thời buổi nào cũng cần luật sư, bác sĩ. Ngoài vấn đề công việc ổn định, lương cao, làm bác sĩ còn cứu được bao nhiêu mạng người, không vinh dự sao được!”, cô Thùy hiện có một cô con gái đang học bác sĩ chuyên ngành mắt tại Đại học Melbourne cho biết.

Những lựa chọn khác nhau

Michael Hùng cố gắng hoàn thành khóa học bác sĩ theo đúng ý nguyện của gia đình. Sau khi mang tấm bằng về trình cha mẹ, Hùng tiếp tục đeo đuổi ngành học mình yêu thích - công nghệ thông tin.
Tốt nghiệp ngành tâm lý (Psychology), Maria Trần rẽ ngang với những hoạt động điện ảnh. Học ngành tâm lý theo ý muốn cha mẹ nhưng sau khi học xong, Maria mới khám phá ra mình muốn làm những công việc khác. Từ một khóa học cộng đồng, Maria tìm thấy niềm vui trong các hoạt động nghệ thuật. Ngoài công việc biên tập, sản xuất và đóng phim, Maria Trần còn tham gia dạy các em nhỏ ở vùng Tây Sydney làm phim. “Những gì đã được học từ ngành tâm lý cũng giúp Maria rất nhiều trong công việc này.”

Joseph Hiếu Đinh hiện là luật sư tập sự tại thành phố Sydney. Anh chia sẻ: “Thông thường, gia đình nào cũng khuyến khích con cái mình học hành thành tài, nhất là thế hệ người Việt thứ nhất đa số là người tị nạn sang Úc sinh sống bắt đầu từ hai bàn tay trắng. Họ phải làm những công việc tay chân cực nhọc để nuôi nấng con cái. Vì vậy, họ mong muốn con cái chọn những ngành nghề vững chắc để có tương lai tươi sáng hơn. Xu hướng chọn ngành luật sư, bác sĩ không phải chỉ phổ biến trong cộng đồng người Việt mà còn với cả những cộng đồng người Châu Á khác. Joseph hiểu và thông cảm với những suy nghĩ của cha mẹ.”

Ý thích cá nhân cộng với sự mong muốn của cha mẹ đã khiến Joseph cố gắng hoàn tất việc học của mình trong bốn năm. Tuy nhiên, Joseph cho biết: “Mới đầu khi xem phim thấy mấy người luật sư ‘ngầu’ quá, đạp bàn, đập búa ầm ầm, nhưng thực tế việc học và công việc rất khác. Đây là công việc đòi hỏi sự tập trung cao độ, không được phân tâm.”

Thế nhưng niềm đam mê chính của Joseph lại là hoạt động nghệ thuật. Joseph gắn bó với rất nhiều hoạt động văn hóa nghệ thuật của giới trẻ người Việt tại Sydney. Ngoài vai trò là người phát ngôn của Rumble Pictures - nhóm làm phim của các bạn trẻ người Việt tại Sydney, Joseph còn là một trong những người sáng lập Vietlish Entertainment. Tên Vietlish kết hợp từ hai chữ Việt và English. Mục đích của nhóm là cổ vũ nền văn hóa Việt với những chương trình và dịch vụ bằng cả hai ngôn ngữ để nối kết những bạn trẻ gốc Việt không chỉ ở Úc mà cả ở các nước khác. Joseph Hiếu Đinh cũng đã được bầu là người Úc gốc Việt Xuất sắc trong năm 2009 (2009 Australian - Vietnamese of the Year).

“Nếu được lựa chọn giữa tòa án và sân khấu xem cái nào vui hơn thì chắc là sân khấu rồi. Sau khi kết thúc công việc hàng ngày, được tham gia vào những hoạt động văn hóa nghệ thuật thì Joseph cảm giác giống như con chim được thả ra khỏi lồng. Mặc dù có những lúc tham gia hoạt động như vậy phải thức đến 3-4 giờ sáng nhưng bản thân Joseph không cảm thấy mệt mà chỉ thấy vui.”
“Tuy nhiên, Joseph không hối hận đã lựa chọn học ngành luật. Nếu trong tương lai mình không thể làm công việc này toàn thời gian mà chỉ bán thời gian thì cũng tuyệt vời quá rồi.”

Aniston & Eckhart: LOVE HAPPENS

It was Saturday night, and having completed our presentation at Seatrip 2009 Conference at UCR, we were a bit bored. Realising there was absolutely no nightlife in Riverside County, myself and Maria Tran decided to check out the nearest picture theatre to see what was on (normally movies releases in the US months before they get to Aussie screens).

The film chosen: LOVE HAPPENS. This film is due to be released in Australia today (26 November 2009) but then mysteriously removed from all cinema “Coming Soon” lists. A bit of personal research confirms it will be released early January 2010.

Burke Ryan (Aaron Eckhart) is a hugely successful best-selling therapist who preaches hypocritical self-help coping mechanisms. Hypocritical because he’s living a secret miserable life, still unable to come into terms with his wife’s death. At a hotel conference, he bumps into Eloise (Aniston), a Seattle florist who’s been unlucky in love. They date. Grief is triggered. Love Happens (as the title promises, even though there’s absolutely no visual chemistry between Aniston and Eckhart).

I’d give this film some credit for attempting a hard story. It’s been marketed as romantic comedy, when really it’s not romantic, nor is it funny. It’s rather about someone’s journey to overcome grief, and it certainly got me thinking..

Sometimes in life, there are times where I find myself living a lie, pretending everything’s okay, when really, I have not truly come to terms with loss, betrayal of trust, the inability to let go. Shit happens. But it’s when you actually do something about it and face your greatest fears that you actually move on. Maybe then, love might give a chance.

Cô năm nay vừa tròn 20 tuổi thế nhưng rất đa tài, vừa là một diễn viên, ca sĩ, nghệ sĩ, xướng ngôn viên đài truyền hình và người mẫu. Cô đã tạo cho mình một tên tuổi rất quen thuộc trong giới văn nghệ Việt Nam. Cô chính là Tóc Tiên, hay nếu dịch sát nút bằng tiếng Anh: “Fairy Hair.” Từ Tháng Hai năm nay, Tiên đã cùng với gia đình định cư tại California Hoa Kỳ để họp tập Đại Học ngành Khoa Học (Bachelor of Science). Cho đến giờ, con đường nghệ thuật của cô rất gồng ghềnh đầy thử thách, có lúc đơn côi một mình, còn lịch trình sinh hoạt show diễn rất đòi hỏi. Vài tháng trước đây cô đã phải đối phó với một sự kiện hiểu lầm chụp mũ trên các diễn đàn internet, thế nhưng cô vẫn tiếp tục làm việc với trung tâm băng nhạc Thúy Nga và học hành chăm chỉ.

Nhưng hơn tất cả mọi sự, Tiên tỏ vẻ là một người rất vui tính, không giả-dối, thích đùa giỡn với tiếng cười rất hồn nhiên (charismatic).

Nhóm Vietlish từ bên Úc: Maria Trần và Joseph Hiếu Đinh (người lãnh giải Người Úc Gốc Việt Xuất Sắc 2009) đã được hân hạnh gặp gỡ ngôi sao trẻ này tại văn phòng trụ sở Thúy Nga, sau khi bị từ chối ở tiệm Lees Sandwiches vai thước cuối đường.

Bởi trình độ Việt ngữ hạn chế, Maria đã tự nguyện quay phim để Joseph Hiếu Đinh ráng nặn ra trình độ Viet-lish của mình để đối thoại với người đẹp, thành một kỷ niệm vui nhất trong tuần công tác ở Mỹ (chuyến này Vietlish được mời tham dự thuyết trình Đại Họi Seatrip 09 Conference ở Đại Học University of California, Riverside).

Một vài khám phá nữa cho thấy sự ảnh hưởng toàn quốc của cô, qua những phim quảng cáo của các công ty quốc tế như Pepsi, Biore và Immobile.

Một điều khá thú vị về Tóc Tiên: Cô là một người rất hãnh diện và tự hào về chính mình. Ngay trên những trang facebook, cô chia sẻ những hình ảnh hàng ngày đi học, đeo kính dầy, để tóc xù và nụ cười rất tự nhiên. Phải chăng đây là một luồng gió mới của thế hệ nghệ sĩ giới trẻ, biết hoà nhập với đại chúng và bớt giả tạo?

Shes only 20 years of age and having emerged as child actress, singer, performer, TV presenter and model. She is now a household recognisable name and face of the Vietnam entertainment industry. Her name is Toc Tien or directly translated as fairy hair, but since early February this year, Tien had made the bold transition to California, US to complete her university studies of a Bachelor of Science. So far, her journey has been a rocky, lonely and a highly scheduled one, having been the target of online forums for her controversial appearance with the current Vietnam flag, and facing back to back commitments of her work for Thuy Nga and her study load.

But beyond all this, Tien reveals herself as a happy go lucky, non pretentious girl who is fun and focused and knows how to deliver a charismatic laugh.

Vietlish Team Joseph Hieu Dinh and Maria Tran had the privilege of meeting this established youth star at the back of the local Thuy Nga store after being rejected at meeting space at Lee Sandwiches just a couple metres down the road.

Further discoveries indicates her mainstream Vietnam influence over a wide range of notable worldwide brands such as Pepsi, Biore and immobile.

What is much more interesting about Toc Tien is she isnt afraid to be herself. Election Battle: Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh vs John Quoc Dung Vo

It’s been the talk of the town, and the Election Committee can proudly boast for the first time ever there is an increase in youth awareness and enrollment-to-vote rates have sky-rocketed than ever before. That's because both Presidential candidates are equally reputable with an impressive record of community attachment.

Here are my personal observations:

MR. NGUYEN VAN THANH. Being raised in a very Catholic family, to me, Mr. Thanh’s name has always been synonmous with “Chu Tich” (President). With his clear directions and vision, he created the St. Joseph’s Conference Centre in Bringelly, the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, one of the greatest completed projects accomplished during his Presidency. When I engage in community work, he would always be the one who gives me positive constructive feedback. When receiving the 2009 Australian-Vietnamese of the Year award, he was the first one who congratulated me. With a charming stage presence and public-speaking skills, he is already given the Cabra-nickname as the “Kevin Rudd” of this entire election.

He already has public support of Dr. Nguyen Manh Tien who describes him as “reputable and well respected” (Saigon Times 12/11/09). Even political media guru and chief editor of Saigon Times, Huu Nguyen came out of the closet and called for support for Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (Saigon Times 12/11/09).

Having attention to detail, Mr. THANH’s election campaign ad in the newspaper is even colour coded: blue, white and yellow (Australian-Vietnamese flag colours). He outlines his directions clearly organised, with election promises and a progressive agenda. The bottom of the ad even says: "Authorised by Nguyen Van Thanh" (as if its one of those mainstream ALP/Liberal campaigns).

He loves to portray himself as a visionist and progressive leader who sees there is more work to be done in the community. He believes the current community is very narrow, and would like to open up for more Vietnamese people to get involved in VCA affairs in their specialised fields. Election promises include installation of specialised Department of Culture & Education, Department of Human Rights, Department of Finance, Department of Sporting, Department of Youth, Department of Bonnyrigg VCA Centre Maintenance, Department of Media Affairs, etc. He promises a regular update of the progress of his committee and is more internet saavy (would like VCA website to be updated). He also recognises that there are greater innovative ways of having our community voice heard (besides the traditional protests) and would also like to work into establishing a greater relationships with the mainstream.

His supporting team includes Giang Nguyen who is re-running as Treasurer, Than Nguyen (Former VCA President), Hien Le, Ngoc Oanh Nguyen, Toan Nguyen. Khoa Nguyen is the youngest face of the election, University student, 22 years old, current President of VSA-NSW. His inclusion brings hope that VCA would be more appealing to the youths of Western Sydney. [More details]

JOHN VO QUOC DUNG, younger face of the community, best known for his role as protest cheer-leader in Canberra. He has tirelessly volunteered himself in many community events as Entertainment Coordinator, a determined and committed person, as seen in his role as Coordinator of Hau Due VNCH Radio. His younger brother has served two terms as President of VCA-NSW. So did his father. This shows a family tradition of community involvement.

However is future directions and visions for the community is unclear. His newspaper campaigns shows he is satisified with the current achivements of VCA and would like to continue on in building the community (perhaps in the same trends?). He also a patriotic displaying just the South Vietnamese yellow flag in his campaign and no other flag, and portrays himself as determined to fight for a free and democratic Vietnam.

His supporting team includes Fairfield independent Councillor Nhan Tran, Huy Tran (VGA), Thuy Huong Nguyen (Liberal supporter). These people have also served previous terms in VCA Committee. Michael Nguyen is a new young face, a building/construction graduate.

Perhaps Mr. Tuong Ho is the candidate who is generating the most interest in all media. He is like the “mystery man” in this campaign. Running for Vice-President in Culture & Education, he comes up with the greatest stunt in electoral history: no bio, no academic history, no current occupation history, no record of prior community involvement/experience. VCA-NSW ELECTION 2009: VOTING LOCATION & INSTRUCTIONS

The Vietnamese Community in Australia (NSW Chapter) will finally get to decide their leaders tomorrow Saturday 14 November 2009. Those who have been properly enrolled to vote will be asked to produce two IDs (drivers licence, passport, student ID and medicare card / letter that shows address). Ballot offices will be opened from 9-5pm:

Cabramatta – Cabramatta Community Hall, Railway Pde, Cabramatta

Keeping myself less distracted from the whole BMW "CHONG" incident, I was invited for an interview with ABC Radio (Vietnamese) in Melbourne regarding my views about inter-cultural marriage (marrying someone who is not Vietnamese). Below is the radio transcript of the segment hosted by Kim Anh.

Với các bạn trẻ người Việt sinh ra và lớn lên tại Úc, lấy vợ là vì sự đồng điệu giữa hai tâm hồn chứ không nhất thiết phải là người Việt Nam. Thế nhưng cha mẹ thì vẫn luôn hy vọng con cái có thể kết hôn với người cùng dân tộc...

Ý muốn cha mẹ
Dù rất muốn con cái lấy vợ Việt Nam nhưng ở một xã hội phương Tây tự do như Úc thì cha mẹ không thể ép con cái theo ý muốn của mình. Một vị phụ huynh cảm thán: “Bây giờ con cái đặt đâu cha mẹ ngồi đấy chứ đâu có chuyện cha mẹ đặt đâu con cái ngồi đó nữa!”

Cô Lan có hai đứa con trai đều sinh ra và lớn lên tại Úc. Cô sang Úc cũng đã được mấy chục năm nhưng tiếng Anh không rành. Cô chủ yếu lo chuyện nội trợ trong gia đình để chồng tập trung việc làm ăn bên ngoài. Với tình yêu thương cùng sự giáo dục tận tụy của cha mẹ, cộng thêm với sự may mắn trời cho (‘cha mẹ sinh con trời sinh tính’) nên hai đứa con trai của cô đều học hành giỏi giang, biết lo lắng và quan tâm đến cha mẹ. Cô vui vì con cái trưởng thành nhưng vẫn âm thầm ‘hồi hộp’ chuyện tình cảm của con.

Hai năm trước, cô cho hai con về Việt Nam thăm ông bà ngoại. “Cô nghe các con nói chuyện thì có vẻ là rất thích chuyến đi lần đó. Mấy anh em họ cùng đi chơi với nhau có kể lại là thằng út có quen với một cô gái nào đó ở Việt Nam, về lại Úc vẫn giữ liên lạc. Không biết đến bây giờ thì thế nào...”
Cô tâm sự: “Cô không ngăn cản chuyện yêu đương của con cái, nó thương người nào thì mình chấp nhận thôi. Tuy nhiên, cô vẫn mong là có được dâu người Việt. Gia đình cô dâu thì theo đạo Tin Lành, còn gia đình chú rể thì theo đạo Phật. Đến lúc gần cưới, hai gia đình ngồi lại bàn bạc với nhau thì lại có sự bất đồng. Gia đình chú rể muốn nghi thức theo đạo Phật, có bàn thờ, có lạy tổ tiên... nhưng gia đình cô dâu thì nhất quyết không chịu. Đây chỉ mới là mâu thuẫn đầu tiên trong hàng loạt những khúc mắc tiếp theo sau này.

Nếu tìm được người hợp với mình mà không phải là người Việt Nam thì cũng... không vấn đề gì.”

Tiếng gọi con tim là thế. Tuy nhiên, theo ý kiến của đa số các bạn trẻ người Việt sinh ra và lớn lên tại Úc thì tuyệt vời nhất là có được cả hai: vừa theo tiếng lòng vừa cùng chung nguồn gốc văn hóa.

“Thật sự mà nói thì Michael có rất nhiều bạn muốn lấy vợ người Việt. Thế nhưng việc này xem ra rất khó vì các bạn ấy toàn chơi chung với Malaysia, Trung Quốc, Úc... Điều kiện để quen biết với các cô gái Việt Nam lại không nhiều.”

Joseph cũng đồng ý với ý kiến này: “Một số người bạn của Joseph chơi trong nhóm toàn người Việt Nam thì có điều kiện để quen với các bạn gái người Việt. Còn với những bạn không sống trong cộng đồng Việt thì chuyện quen và cưới vợ khác sắc tộc là chuyện dễ hiểu, nhất là trong môi trường đa văn hóa như Úc.”

Gặp lại cô Lan một tháng trước đây, tôi thấy cô rạng rỡ hơn. Thì ra lại cũng chuyện tình cảm của con cái. Con trai út của cô đang quen một cô gái người Việt sang Úc du học đã được hơn ba năm. Con trai cô cũng đã dẫn bạn gái về nhà giới thiệu với cha mẹ. “Con bé nhìn hiền và dễ thương, lễ phép, vừa đi học vừa đi làm tự lo cho bản thân mình”, cô kể mà mắt long lanh hy vọng...

Yesterday (10 November 2009), my website received a strange link from an anonymous person with nickname "Tammy Flew." I thought it was some sort of viral link and ignored it.

Early this morning, Maria Tran received a similar message:

Ha ha. Check this out http://the-riotact.com/?p=15644 For someone who is associated with higher learning, you must be flunking...right? Hope they throw the book at you.

This lead her towards website RiotACT. This is a funky grassroots "online riot" for the Canberra (ACT) Region. Its a sort of central online hub point for all things local such as the news, arts, music and entertainment and also for anyone with any comments, queries and complaints to raise it and rowd up other Canberrians.

Maria checked it out, only to realise that our visit to Canberra earlier this year as guest lecturers in Australian National University (Internet II: Alternative Media) had coincidentally collided with the owner of the nortorious Beemer (BMW) with the number plate "CHONG".

We crossed paths with this car parked at the Faculty of Arts. I found the humour in that my acronym BMW (Be My Wife) is now associated with CHONG (which is Vietnamese for HUSBAND). This was my facebook pic for some time, little did I know that the owner of the vehicle was also very "Internet Alternative Media" saavy. So saavy that his illegal activities are being posted on YouTube.

That if you are going to do something stupid and illegal, then don’t take footage of it. As seen by this young bloke who loves his car so much that he just has to show everyone how fast he can drive on Canberra's roads.

Far out! Canberrian vilgilantes do go along way! A post that was made two days ago (10 Nov 2009) has involved in 67 posts (probably counting!) CHONG's friends and haters and the police!
So this is me.. Australian-Vietnamese of the Year 2009 now a Canberra suspect!

One great idea of taking a photo with a funny looking number plate can really land you under suspicion. I've been to Canberra a couple of times in my life and I must say, its a really peaceful and quiet place. Not much happens in regards to community activities that involve that culturally diverse (people from Non-English Speaking backgrounds) and a lot of "youngies" have really detailed it as a place where "nothing happens". People work and do the same thing over and over again, go to parties on the weekends or leave for Sydney. So when a little "Asian nippy gook" goes around doing something like MR CHONG it must definitely cause an outrage to society !!

Mind, Body & Sprirt Festival in Darling Harbour

I attended the Mind body spirit Festival today with Maria Tran (Vietlish) at the Sydney Convention Centre. For the price of $16, you would get to sample over hundreds of interesting and quirky stalls on what I call the “alternatives” to well being.

We couldn’t help ourselves but quickly rushed to get our teeth whitened for a great value of $90, for a 15 minute treatment that lasts for 12 months. Next thing we found ourselves layed in the dentists chairs, in full view of curious passerbys checking out what this funky blue light was doing in front of our mouths.

Other activities was that I got a check up with a chiropractor. Apparently Maria got some tensions in the neck. So did I. Yeah… and?

We decided to get our aura images taken.

This stall seems to be doing well in business as people were lining up to get a photo taken with pretty overlays of colors surround it. The “Aura Images” camera is a bio-feedback imaging system which translates a person’s energy , measured from the electromagnetic impulses of the hands, into an individual pattern and personal colours, representing the aura. This pattern of vibrant colours is overlaid onto an instant photograph of a person to give a visual impression of what you aura may look like to “sensitives” who see auras.

The aura photograph gives information on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance of a person at the time it is take and can therefore be used as a basis for further analysis of an individual’s potential.

At the present time there is insufficient research to show definite health trait and the photograph, whilst responding to your specific energy outputs must primarily be regarded as simulation of your aura, interpreted within the limits of the computer programme.

At time of blogging, I think I left my aura image in Maria's showbag GRRR ! But will scan mine, complete with the readings when I next see her...!

Overall, I guess that Mind, Body & Spirit Festival is an interesting massive gathering and a place to be on a quiet Sunday afternoon. However, don't forget to bring a wad of cash to spend up on getting your future and fortune told...or convincingly guessed. I just thought it was a funny place to see odd products and services being marketed such as "Psychic Oranges" and "sound massages". Oh well, what ever works!

Jackie Chan visits VIETNAM

For all you kung-fu fans out there, Jackie Chan is currently in Vietnam !

He arrived Hanoi Airport this morning to support non-government organisation OPERATION SMILE, which supports the treatment of Vietnamese children with cleft lip and palate deformities. This was his second time in Vietnam since 2005, when he came to support another
charity cause – UNICEF/UNAIDS.

VN Express reported the Hollywood star unprecedently changed his itinerary and requested to be personally taken to Hanoi Cu-Ba Hospital. This was where he visited the children who are being treated and their parents, bringing a smile upon their faces.

A few hours ago, Jackie arrived at Intercontinental Hotel (Westlake- Ho Tay), where he attended a press conference followed by a reception function along with Vietnamese and American high profile politicians and ambassadors and celebrities.

Showing his compassionate side, Jackie reportedly said to reporters: “I’d love to be a real-life hero. What you see on screen is really just action, fighting and shooting. But in real life, if I see someone in trouble, I’d do the best I can to save them and personally take them to hospital.”

Jackie laughed when he was told his name translates to Thành Long, or Trần Cảnh Sinh (Tran? Bet you Maria Emtee Tran would love this. Since when has Jackie turned Viet ? I’d love to see the person who actually invents Viet names for Chinese stars – why can’t Tom Cruise get a viet name)

Anyway, back to Jackie Chan. Asked if there is any chance of potential kung-fu film projects in Vietnam. He smiled.

The World of Clowns @ Powerhouse Youth Theatre

In the three hour session, taught by Craig Anderson, myself and Joseph Hieu Dinh indulged in the world of clowns and street theatre. This was not a class for people who had a strong aversion to all things silly, because it was a class that rock the boat of acting appropriately and a course that will be sure to give you a stomach full of laughs.

We warmed up to some light bouts of juggling tricks, hula hooping and other circus tricks and soon enough we went straight into a number of rediculous silly music based games such as the “typewriter”.

Craig gave us a quick run down of the historics of clowns (they have a history?), the types, the global clown tournaments back in the 70s, and also acting and storytelling through the physiques.So what are clowns? They are comical performers stereotypically with coloured wigs, stylised make up and costumes, awkwardly large footwear and red nose, all with the intent to entertainment kids.

Types of Clowns
There are three types of clowns: Whiteface, Auguste & Hobbo/ Tramp.Whiteface: most common clown, when performing with the Auguste and/or Tramp, this clown will remain in charge, setting up the routine, throwing rather than taking the pie, slap or kick. Although more comical than the Straight Whiteface, this clown is a bit more reserved than the impish and gregarious Auguste.

Auguste: The most comical of all clowns. He/she is impish, gregarious and thrives on slapstick. His/her actions are big, clumsy and awkward. He/she does not have much in common with the Whiteface except for the makeup and costume. His/her personality is that of a rabble rouser. When appearing with the Whiteface, the Auguste (German meaning "foolish") is the brunt of the joke. However, with the Tramp, he becomes the instigator in control of the situation.

Hobbo/Tramp: forlorn and downtrodden character who has nothing and knows he will never have anything, probably be a loner, which is reflected in his determination to be silent, generally not talking to anyone but his peers. His downcast mannerisms and shuffling burdensome movements reflect his hard life.

Joseph Hiếu Đinh & Maria Trần hân hạnh giới thiệu đêm trình chiếu phim và thảo luận, để chia sẽ những thành quả trong ngành phim ảnh của người Việt hải ngoại, từ Úc Đại Lợi cho đến thị trường quốc tế.

Đây là một tổ chức mang tính cánh cộng đồng mở rộng, dành cho quý đồng hương, đặc biệt những ai muốn tìm hiểu thêm về ngành phim ảnh. Được tổ chức bởi Powerhouse Youth Theatre cùng với sự hỗ trợ của Hội Đồng Thành Phố Fairfield, Vietlish, Information & Cultural Exchange.

Tiết mục đặc biệt trong đêm là dịp trình chiếu phim Vượt Sóng (Journey From The Fall). Cuốn phim này đạo diễn do Hàm Trần, người được đề cử giải Academy Award, và lãnh nhận hơn 14 giải danh dự. Vượt Sóng dựa theo những câu truyện có thật, xoay quanh một gia đình trên hành trình tìm tự do, cùng những cảnh hậu chiến rất lịch sử. Thành phần diễn viên: Long Nguyễn, Diễm Liên và tài tử quốc tế Kiều Chinh (Joy Luck Club).

Joseph Hieu Dinh nói: “Đây là cơ hội tốt để chúng ta cùng nhau chia sẻ và tìm hiểu về tình hình thị trường phim ảnh, và học hỏi nghệ thuật phim ảnh, như là một phương pháp kể chuyện, vừa thuật lại lịch sử, vừa nêu lên những vấn đề xã hội và văn hoá.”

Maria Tran nói: “Những năm gần đây chúng tôi nhận thấy sự bùng nổ của phong trài phim ảnh Việt Nam khắp thế giới, được rất nhiều sự chú ý và đem lại rất nhiều giải thưởng. DISCUSSION FORUM: Film-making in the Vietnamese diaspora

Team Vietlish: Joseph Hieu Dinh & Maria Tran presents a night of film screening celebrating the emerging Vietnamese film industry both local and internationally.

Organised by Powerhouse Youth Theatre with the support of Fairfield City Council, Information & Cultural Exchange, Vietlish & Craig Anderson, this is a free event, opening for all members of community, especially those interested in the film industry.

The night begins with the screening of digital storytelling projects made from recent community project, Vietnamese Stories & Vietnamese Storycubes. These are short video clips made by a number of Vietnamese youths living in Western Sydney, focusing on culture and identity.

This will be followed by a discussion forum led by Vietlish regarding the current trends of the Vietnamese diaspora film industry, particularly focusing on recent films, The Rebel (Charlie Nguyen), Passport to Love (Victor Vu) and Footy Legends (Khoa Do).

Special feature for the night is the screening of Journey from the Fall (Vuot Song). This film was directed by Academy Award winning nominee Ham Tran (‘The Anniversary’) and acknowledged with more than 14 awards. Inspired by actual events, this Vietnamese (with English subtitles) film follows one family’s post-Vietnam war struggle for freedom. Stars Long Nguyen, Diem Lien and renowned international actress Kieu Chinh (‘Joy Luck Club’).

Joseph Hieu Dinh said: “This will be a great opportunity to discuss about the current market and how film acts as a medium that empowers storytelling, thereby encapsulating history, cultural and identity issues.”

Maria Tran said: “In the recent years there's been an explosion of independent Vietnamese films around the globe that has received widespread attention and accolades awards. It’s exciting to see such success amongst independent and culturally diverse film makers who went against the grain.”

Review: MAO'S LAST DANCER

Based on the best-selling autobiography, this emotional provoking film follows the life of Chinese dancer Li Cunxin. Being hand-picked at a young age from the shanty-raggy villages of China, he was sent to train at the Beijing Dance Academy, before being flown to the USA. This is where he rose to fame at Houston Ballet, met his first love, and eventually encountering challenges as he tries to defect towards the West.

The film was carefully crafted to play the “emotional,” that despite sitting alone in the corner of the theatre, I felt the urge to chivalrously offer my kleenex’s around. It touched a number of cliched themes and cultural issues including family attachment and determination to succeed by pushing one’s limits (this already seen in countless precedent films). Perhaps the only difference is the dancing, and Bruce Beresford’s choice of slow-motion successfully captures the artistry of ballet. Thumbs up for that part.

What I find noticeable is the political perceptions portrayed in the film. The drama unfolds as Li faces the greatest conflict of his life: having to choose between his passion for dance and loyalty to his family back mainland China. I wouldn’t be surprised this film was graciously welcomed in the American film industry. It plays the safe card - America is the hero flashed with FREEDOM and LIBERTY while Mao’s China is deemed as the evil evil one - the typical political propaganda used in the 70’s. I was surprised some scenes for this film was actually permitted to be shot on-location China with no problem.

What I like about this film is that once again Asian’s get a piece of fame on screen. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of similar stories untold within the Vietnamese. Separating from loved one’s, challenges between family and one’s passion.. and this I’m definitely certain: plenty of political perceptions. With the current rise in the Vietnamese film industry, if we know how to settle our differences, I’d like to see a rise in storytelling. History is history. It’s now time to come together, work together and express ourselves to the rest of the world.

Joseph Hieu Dinh supports, encourages, and calls upon all individuals of Vietnamese-Australian background to enrol to vote at the Vietnamese Community in Australia - NSW Chapter (“VCA”) elections for 2009-2011 term.

Section 15.3 of the VCA constitution states that all individuals who are:

b) Of Vietnamese-Australian background (includes Australian-born Vietnamese); and
c) Properly enrolled in the electoral list
Will have the right to vote at the VCA elections.

Vietlish encounters haunted house, Cnr Hazard and Euclid Ave, Garden Grove

Myself and Joseph Hieu Dinh have had countless of crazy adventures ever since our first meet at 2008 Tet Festival, Sydney. But none has matched up to our up close and personal account of another kind from the third dimension since that night we set foot on the alleged haunted house in Orange County.

“Haunted” you ask? What does that mean? And yes that was something we both would laugh at, nervously. I mean, there are many other things that we can discuss when Team Vietlish get together, like Mcing, business ventures, random video clips, skits, script development, guerrilla tactics… Richard Branson…but ghosts, apparitions, supernatural, paranormal, poltergist?

Now, we have both returned home to Sydney and myself, I’m in the comfy space of my desk by the balcony window writing this reflective entry at the hours of 11pm on a Saturday night. To some, this should be a unmentioned blog entry, but I do hope for others, we can appreciate what we got on this planet and that we are still alive, in the physical dimension.

The Case

There’s not much solid documentation about this case. In fact, we couldn’t find actual articles that retell the rumoured tragedy that spiralled a series of unfortunate events, unexplained mishaps inconvienient deaths that is associated this house. But here are some of the stories that have been woven by the locals who know that area.

Story no. 1 – Hit-and-run of a female pedesterian.

The story goes that a women was crossing the street on the corner of Eulcid Ave and Hazard St and was hit but a car that didn’t stop after the accident. She was severely injured as a result and crawled across the street to the nearest house in seek of help. She reached the nearest house, tried to call out for help but nobody attended to her. She was found dead at the front entrance of this house. She was also pregnant at that time.

Story no. 2 – Truck ploughs into the house

The story goes that an accident occurred resulting in the death of a family whom lived at the house while they were driving home to their house on the corner of Eulcid Ave and Hazard St.

So what has happened since the incident? The house was sold with a number of owners complaining of hearing errie noises and unexplained events. All tenants moved out of the house and even today, the house remains empty.

But there was another death incident that occurred after the unexplained mishaps. The decision was to knock down the house, however during the construction of the current home, a worker fell from the roof and died.

Other locals have noted that the presence have been known to affect other properties as well, the liquor store close by, other houses nearby that have drove tennants living near the vicinity of this house to move out.

Our experiences?

Well, you know me, I can’t resist living with my feline curiousity and my persuasive nature has always got the better of renown scaredy cat Joseph. So on Monday 5th Oct, 2009 (8pm) I narrowly convince Joseph to drive to the local property for a quick check.

Joseph dropped me off two houses earlier to the property and I walked the way to have my first physical encounter of this unique house.

I have to say, the street was super dead quite, not a living sound just a strange thick humming about my head that the powerlines could have been responsible for. The house itself, had its gate wide open and such magnificent bright lights were streaming out, both upstairs and downstairs and even through the garage. I casually strolled up to the front door, tempted to knock to find out who is occupying such a home, and to find out if it is necessary for them to waste such electrical resources without an obvious reason. I did note that upstairs there was a shrine of worship of some sort, I couldn’t make out what it was. Jesus? Not certain.

The truth was, I kind of felt a little disappointed, the haunted house on Euclid Ave seem less scary as the local have yarned it out to be. Meanwhile, chicken of the night, Joseph slowly rolled his car to the pass the house, and signaled me to quickly get into the car so we can make our grand escape from Deadsville.

That night while we slept at Saigon Inn, things didn’t seem quite right.

A couple of things happened. I had a few weird bouts of moments where I literally couldn’t move myself, an invisible strong pressure on my body forcing me on the bed. I broke free several times, but would lapse back into sleep only to undergo the same thing. At times, I recall whispers in my right ear. But in general, I come from a pretty rational background and I’d still attribute those accounts to fatigue, tiredness and lack of sleep.

Joseph, in the morning, reaccounts dreaming of a shadowy figure that stood over him. But again, he was unsure of how to react – whether dream or not, so instead passed it over.

Our following nights ceased to be normal, we encounted strange unaccounted knocks, bathroom noises, plumbing issues such as water turning on and off and ever now and the our lamps would sway like if there was wind passing through room – when now window or doors is open.

The final straw of coincidence is when we ate a late dinner at Pho Thang Long – Bolsa Ave and during that time a strange old lady came straight to us, insisting that we buy a bunch of flowers. Joseph, proving his chivalry did, and the lady left with kind words of bidding us happiness. Her final errie suggestion was that this bunch of flowers were appropriate for an altar. She quickly huddled away and I was left with an imagery image of return to the house, tingling feeling down my spine and a question mark in my head.

I told Joseph what I felt, I even called upon the waiter to enquire about the flower seller and her relations with the resturant. He even note (without any clue) that there’s a strangeness about the woman and that she see something.

Everything began to urge me to visit the house again, at the wee hours of 2am. Joseph resisted. He said no repeatedly. We paid the bill and left the resturant. We decided to go on a walk and debate the issue further. Coincidences began to further emerge. Each time Joseph walked pass a lamp post, the lights would turn off.

Luckily, our new found muso friend Tony T. Nguyen, called and we arranged it so that he can join us to lessen the fear factor on Joseph’s part.

Joseph nervously drove to the property, I can tell he was nervous. He was singing random Thuy Nga – Paris By Night songs in such a haphazard manner and at inconsistent volumes. We stopped at the front and I jumped out.

This time, the house looked way different. There was no lights, and the gates were bound shut. There was a moment in my head that I wanted to jump the gate, but I didn’t. At 2am, I decided to rest the bunch of flowers on the gate.

Jumped back into the car to confirm mission accomplished to the team. Joseph starts that car. It doesn’t work. Joseph repeatedly attempts again and again. Nothing. 2am. Parked in front of an alleged ghost house in the middle of nowhere. Perfect horror movie scenario.

“Your gear is not in parked” comments Tony.

Phew! No ghost business, just Joseph’s stupidity.

We visited the house in the morning to take a picture of it. No flowers. I hope whoever (whatever) took it like it. So that’s the story behind Vietlish and our encounter of the house on Euclid Ave & Hazard St. I’d love to hear what you think. Any similar experiences out there? Any alternative explanations? Myself [Joseph Hieu Dinh] and Maria Tran were invited as special guests for VHN-TV and VAN-TV’s “Kristine Sa Show.” We were surprised to have even been discovered. We started as nobodys, still nobodys but just being ourselves, sometimes clowns, other times discussing serious issues.

A shout-out to our muso friend Tony T. Nguyen who came along to the filming to support us. The four of us had breakfast at local Denny’s (Fountain Valley), where we got to know a bit more about each other. Kristine Sa, who was still traumatised from the taste of vegemite we brought to her show (disguised as nutella), shared her tough experiences entering the show industry. We learnt about Tony’s recent album “Soundtrack to My Life,” and the highs and lows of music-teaching and being an independent song-writer / producer.

We talked about almost everything, learning we had more in common than anything else. Inspired by our conversation, Tony came up with a song. This is no-way like other commercial songs. Its something directly from his heart. Its something that’s recorded raw from his room, could sound a bit churchy, but really we find it very cool.

Vietlish @ Canterbury Children's Festival 2009

Team Vietlish Joseph Hieu Dinh & Maria "Emtee" Tran are set to MC Host the 2009 Canterbury Children's Festival in Canterbury on Saturday 17 October, 2009 from 11m till 3pm at Harcourt Public School, Cnr Second Ave & Ninth Ave, Campsie.

This annual event has been running in Banktown since 1999 and is supported by the Vietnamese Community in Australia - NSW Chapter, Scouts Australia - NSW Branch, and the Bankstown Multicultural Youth Services.

It has gained the support and resources from Bankstown City Council from 2001 and many additional cultural and community groups, including Aboriginal, African, Arabic, Australian, Chinese, Cook Islander, Greek, Indian, Irish, Lebanese, Macedonian, Nepalese, Polish, Sikh, Spanish, Vietnamese, Guides and Scouts.

The Children's Festival is one of the starting points where young children, their parents and friends can come together to learn, understand and appreciate other cultures. This will be achieved by activities where everyone can participate and be able to share in the fun and enjoyment of learning by doing.

These activities will be as diverse as singing, dancing, poster competitions, cooking, marching, lantern making, lion dancing, national costume competition, games, a climbing wall and many others.

Come and support the building of a more cohesive society starting with children with the participation in activities and sharing the fun - in the fight to breakdwon the social barriers between cultures and generations.

"I'm please that Vietlish has been invited to host this unique event," says Joseph Hieu Dinh (2009 Australian Vietnamese of the Year) who also hosted last year's 10th Anniversary of Children's Festival along with Ms Tania Huynh and Channel 9's Mark Ferguson.

"This has followed our recent successful event Vietnamese Storyexchange - an intergenerational exhibition of the works of the young and old from the Vietnamese community" adds Maria.

Vietlish is a non profit youth dynamo who are very interested in bridging the intergenerational gap and has since returned from their 10 day community & cultural development consultation tour of the state of California.

Sydney and Michael met at local Liverpool markets, and the sparkle of chemistry was apparent from the very start. Michael was so sure they were meant for each other, and decided to take things slow: “If we were to date, I’d marry you.” They became the cutest business partners, tag-teaming and complimenting each other’s skills through work.

Michael proposed at Darling Harbour, where he got down on his hands and knees. Strangely they got into a massive argument, so Michael sadly puts the ring back into his pocket and goes home. He tries again the next morning and scores !

This lovely couple was married in traditional Vietnamese tea-ceremony on Sunday 28th September 2009, followed by the reception held at Villa Capri, Cabramatta, hosted by Joseph Hieu Dinh.

To their surprise, the Cabramatta Moon Festival was still on, and as they were arriving at the reception, they were ambushed by their very own MC, still in “Chu Cuoi” costume for a photograph. Turns out their MC was also hosting at the Nine Network Stage just steps away from the reception, and was promoting Vietlish-TV’s “Folklore of Mr. Cuoi & Ms Hang-Nga.”

With all the festivity of Spring in Sydney, team Vietlish Joseph Hieu Dinh (2009 Australian Vietnamese of the Year) and Maria “Emtee” Tran (MT) have been invited to take part of one of the biggest festivals in Western Sydney: 2009 Cabramatta Moon Festival.

A live vox-pop interview coverage of the event was filmed during the morning, followed by their gig as MC-hosts of the entertainment all night til the fireworks spectacular finale at Nine Network Stage (John Street).

During the festival, Vietlish launched its most recent episode: “The Folklore of Mr. Cuoi & Ms. Hang Nga”. Cabramatta was used as backdrop to the modernised version of this ancient folklore.

Behind the Scenes photos

Joseph Dinh is Cuoi, a poor farmer husband who had his cries of help answered by an Asian fairy god-mother, who grants him a magical tree that has magical powers to heal and cure, thereby creating wealth.

Excited, he rushes home to his wife Hang-Nga (played by Maria Tran) and soon they were living the high life – Kings and Queens with their entourage Cabra Men-In-Black.

Of course, good things don’t last forever, and pretty soon they lose the tree because silly Hang-Nga dropped it into the toilet (originally the tree cannot stand dirty water). It began to uproot itself and travels to the sky. In an attempt to hold it back, Cuoi is pulled up with it all the way to the moon.

A parody of Australian-Idol 2008 contestant Thanh Bui’s smash hit “Mirror Mirror” was changed to Cuoi’s “Magical Tree” chant. Joseph Dinh, who wrote the part hopes Thanh “doesn’t mind.”

Stories by young and old give glimpses of previous lives

Old and new forms of storytelling will come together on Saturday when the Vietnamese Storyexchange takes place at Cabravale Leisure Centre from 1pm to 3pm. The free exhibition features large cubes covered in family photos and 10 digital stories, or mini-films, created by Vietnamese youths. Event co-ordinator Maria Tran (pictured above with Storyexchange participant Thap Dau and facilitator Joseph Hieu Dinh) said: "Storytelling is very important for the Vietnamese community because it's a very reserved community and there's been an intergenerational gap between the young and the old. There's a selection of stories, from the [refugee] journey to Australia, being on boats and the war - a lot of them still carry a lot of baggage that they haven't been able to share with anyone."

With all the festivity of Spring in Sydney, team Vietlish Joseph Hieu Dinh (JH) and Maria “Emtee” Tran (MT) have been invited to take part of one of the biggest festivals in Western Sydney: 2009 Cabramatta Moon Festival.

This is when they will launch internationally their most recent episode: “The Folklore of Mr. Cuoi & Ms. Hang Nga”. Cabramatta was used as backdrop to the modernised version of this ancient folklore.

Joseph Dinh is Cuoi, a poor farmer husband who had his cries of help answered by an Asian fairy god-mother, who grants him a magical tree that has magical powers to heal and cure, thereby creating wealth.

Excited, he rushes home to his wife Hang-Nga (played by Maria Tran) and soon they were living the high life – Kings and Queens with their entourage Cabra Men-In-Black.

Of course, good things don’t last forever, and pretty soon they lose the tree because silly Hang-Nga dropped it into the toilet (originally the tree cannot stand dirty water). It began to uproot itself and travels to the sky. In an attempt to hold it back, Cuoi is pulled up with it all the way to the moon.

Joseph said: “Moon Festival is going to be a big day for us, as we’re going to be roaming around, doing live vox-pop interviews, and coordinating competitions. I'm very excited because I'm also going to be MC host of entertainment based at the Channel 9 stage.”

Maria said: “We encourage everyone to be on a look-out for us, as there will be plenty of

surprises from our crew.”

Their whereabouts will be updated hourly on their official website. Vietlish is also supporting the screening of Rumble Picture’s “Maximum Choppage: Round II” which will be screened outdoors for the first time.

Viet cultures show for all

WESTERN Sydney's arts and media organisation ICE (Information and Cultural Exchange) will launch the Vietnamese Story Exchange event in Cabramatta this weekend.

The event is to display the diverse stories of more than 30 people, young and old, from the Australian-Vietnamese community.

Project co-ordinator Maria Tran said the event would bring together ``the demographics of young and old generations''.

``In our area there's a large Vietnamese population and they want to come to a space to hear about stories that are relevant to these people in the community,'' she said.

There will be 10 short films as well as photographs and a collection of personal and cultural artefacts.

The audience will have the chance to experience stories of personal journeys to Australia, identity, school days, family, joys and despairs, struggles and triumphs, and aspirations for their future and that of the community. All those involved produced their own work in workshops that explored themes of memory, culture and identity.

Moon Festival - Movies goes outdoors for fans !

FESTIVAL-goers will be able to experience an outdoor-cinema atmosphere at this year's celebrations.

For the first time, a large screen will be set up on John Street, Cabramatta, for a series of local films to be played.

The screenings will begin at 1pm and include short films produced by those involved in the Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE) arts and media organisation.

Maria Tran, supporting director of Rumble Pictures, said this was a good scheme to get more people involved in film, arts and culture in the fairfield region.``This is the first time the Moon Festival has gone digital,'' she said.

``This is a good chance for those to see their work uploaded on the big screen. It's like a YouTube world for them.''

Rumble Pictures will present its 2005 feature film Maximum Choppage, a kung-fu action-packed short story created by local volunteer members.It took four years to make and has had screenings in a number of Australian cities.In addition to the films, Ms Tran and the Vietlish Entertainment crew will be documenting the festival throughout the day.Maximum Choppage will begin screening at 5.45pm.
